Congratulations — you closed. Before you unpack the last box, take 20 minutes to lock down these seven protections. Most are free or low-cost, and skipping them is the single most expensive mistake new homeowners make.

  • Confirm your homeowners insurance is in force and matches your mortgage docs
  • Set up automatic mortgage payments
  • Get a basic term life policy sized to your mortgage balance
  • Review (or write) a simple will naming guardians and beneficiaries
  • Update your emergency fund target to 3–6 months of housing costs
  • Take dated photos of every room for insurance claims
  • Save the contact info for a licensed agent you trust
